PrEP stands for “pre-exposure prophylaxis.” It is a medication for people who are HIV-1 negative that helps prevent getting HIV-1 through sex. It can be taken as a pill or as an injection.
If your sexual partner is HIV-1 positive, PrEP helps decrease the odds of contracting the HIV-1 virus if taken as prescribed.
While PrEP does not help against other STDs and should always be used with condoms, this treatment can help prevent contracting HIV-1 from a sexual partner if a condom breaks or is used incorrectly.
